Herringbone Collection in colour!

The Herringbone Colour-way pattern was one of the designs that came out of the work I did for the Kindred in Blue show that Krystal Speck and I created for the Bookhou shop in Toronto last June.  I was working in shades of blue and came up with this design for a number of pieces that sold at the show.  It was one of my favourite designs, and I couldn't wait to try it with other colours! I launched the bottle vase design (with my own photos) in 5 colour-ways back in the fall, but for this photo-shoot I honed in on 3 that were my favourite, the yellow-green, the blues and the orange-red.  I also thought the design might look great on a couple of bowls in shades of blue, and I'm so glad I tried it.

This design really reminds me of the west coast.  I see the mountains in the blues, trees in the yellow-green and orange sunsets in the orange-red version of the design.  There is something really architectural about the pattern that fits in with my architectural paintings.  I couldn't help thinking about perspective and angles when I first started playing with it and I can really see myself pulling it into a painting... if I ever get time to do that again.

This is one of those patterns that I have to take my time in glazing.  Each zig-zagged area is hand-painted with glaze after I've mapped out the herringbone lines in tape.  Then a resist is applied so I can dip the white glaze onto the piece. A bit more resist and the herringbone tape gets removed with a lot of touching up as I go.  I quite like that those lines are a bit different then the white glaze, so in some cases a soft grey blue or with the orange, the clear glaze in those herringbone lines finishes it off nicely.  I'm looking forward to seeing this design evolve and move onto other pots- like a teapot would be pretty sweet too.  Next photoshoot- I promise!

New for Fall available at West Elm Vancouver!

Introducing my new glaze pattern for the fall- the Herringbone in colour-ways of turquoise to green, orange to red, grey to blue, shades of blue and yellow to green! Really, the possibilities with this design feel endless and I'm looking forward to not ever feeling bored with this one, despite the extra effort and work involved.

I'm heading over today to the new West Elm store on South Granville in Vancouver to drop off these new vases for their store launch and 'WE heart handmade art' Etsy event that's happening on the 13th of September! It's one of those opportunities that came up while we were away on holidays with a super fast turn-around date.  Fortunately I had pulled these new herringbone colours out of the kiln before we left on holidays.  I'll be expanding the series to include the colour-ways as mugs, teapots and large vases over the next month, similar to the series in blue I created for the Kindred in Blue exhibit this past June!

Now available online

I have up-dated my shops both (my webshop and Etsy) to include some new work- mostly some mugs that were some of the ground work for the 'Kindred' show.
I've been getting some emails about the availability of specific work from the Kindred Show that is still which is still up at bookhou until the end of June.  Please get in touch with arounna@bookhou.com to get information about pricing and shipping on any work you may be interested in!  It's been well received so far so thank you for such great support so far!

Kindred in Blue + White Show

I'm just back from my time in Toronto- what an amazing week! As you can see, the Kindred Show came together beautifully!  A huge thank you to Arounna and John at Bookhou for hosting us- their shop looked really amazing and we couldn't have done this without them.  Krystal's work was stunning- I was so impressed with it in person!  We really couldn't have asked for a better show and turnout at the opening! It was absolutely lovely to meet a ton of the makers and artists I'd been wanting to meet in Toronto for some time.  All in all, so very pleased!

**These were the photos taken with my camera, mostly by me with the one of Krystal and I taken by Arounna.  I'll have ones Arounna took up on the Kindred blog if you wanted to see a few more!
Also, there might be a little bit of Kindred work available online in the coming weeks if you were interested.  I'll keep you posted!

You are so bluetiful to me....

Here's just a few of the images Curtis Hildebrand took of the work I'll be exhibiting in Toronto next week.  It's kind of fun to give you a sneak peek- although you may have already seen glimpses of this work if you are following me on Instagram (dahlhaus art).  I had a lot of fun making new work- I love the colour blue so it wasn't hard for me to think in blue and white, although I will admit, that I'm relieved to be able to add another colour to the mix.  As you can see, my blue glaze range grew exponentially.  Nothing wrong with that;-)!
Krystal was going to be photographing her work today, but in the meantime, check out the work she pulled out of the kiln the other day! Incredible- I love her drippy blues and the simple leaf shapes that she used on these pieces. I absolutely can't wait to see the whole show come together at Bookhou!

So many blues, so little time...

Hello and happy day-before May!! It's exciting and a little daunting that it's May already; only one month until our show opens.  This week is my final week for any wet-work to get finished up- most of the work will get bisqued later this week and then it's all about the glazing, baby.  And all about the blues.  I tell ya, I'll be singing the blues for the next few weeks, but it'll be all worth it.  I promise!

Speaking of testing blue glazes,  Krystal and I have started a 'kindred' blog and a Facebook page for more info.   The blog was created to show the process and background to creating work for the show, but I'll be sure to mention a few things here too.

The main concept for 'kindred' came about as I 'met' Krystal online, thinking that her work came from a similar sensibility and process to mine, while being completely different and unique to Krystal.  I felt our work was 'kindred' and knew we had to bring our work together in some way.  So, with the encouragement of Arounna, who generously offered Bookhou as a place to hold our show, we all met together, about a year ago now.  In the meantime, lots has been happening- I got the big Anthro order, we all have had our share of press, shows, sales and other bits of business to keep us hopping over the last year.  Big sigh, and here we are in May and the show is only 1 month away.  So exciting- we'd love you to join in the kindred spirit of it all, so please, come by and please do say 'hello'!
