Wedluxe Magazine: Western Canada

Well it's going to take a very keen eye (and possibly a magnifying glass, lol) to notice my cake and cupcake stands in the newest Wedluxe Magazine for Western Canada, however, if you do peer close enough, you will see them being used as props for the wedding favors and shoes both on the front page and in the main article called 'Imagination in Plume'. The actual cakes they were hoping to use didn't fit in with the theme of the shoot, which is a bit too bad...  The photographer, Sherri Koop, shot all the photographs in film so there is a real dreamy light that made this shoot absolutely gorgeous! Sherri has shot photos of our family in film a number of times. As a talented photographer and a dear friend I'm really thrilled for her debut magazine article photography shoot!  Congratulations Sherri!

A Cup-cake Stand give-a-way!

It's about time for another give-a-way here on my blog, and in honour of wedding season, I thought this cup-cake stand might a good place to start!

This little cup-cake stand was created especially for a photo-shoot for a wedding magazine that will be out on the stands on June 21st.  The concept behind the shoot was soft pinks and creams with romantic and pretty elements! I had a lot of fun thinking about inspiration, but not heaps of time to make the work.  Nevertheless, I created a series of cake plates and cupcake stands inspired by Posie Bouquets and a Folk Art Love Bird design that I silkscreened onto my wheel-thrown form with a ceramic underglaze.  They measure 6" across and 3.5 inches high, with just enough room to put 3 lovely cupcakes on them.  Perfect for an intimate tea party or pull it out as a stand for your brie cheese in the evening, this little cupcake stand is simple and lovely for any table.

Recently featured

A lovely bunch of Etsy front page features last month made for some busy shipping days!  Here's a few snapshots!  My poppy cake plate is also featured on a Storque article as of monday- all about cheese- lol!  My cake and cup-cake stands do make great crackers and cheese serving platters when they aren't being used for the obvious, so it was nice to have a few more hits on my Etsy shop from that over the past day!

Pre-wedding shoot jitters...

Truly, I did bite off a little more than I could chew when I took on the assignment of making cake plates and Tile frames in 3.5 weeks for a wedding magazine shoot in PINKS, creams and whites.  Pink, for those of you that understand anything about glazing, is actually a tricky colour to get for mid-range to high fire glazes.  I fire to a cone 6-7 and pink stain mostly burns off at this temperature.  3.5 weeks is not quite enough time to actually burn screens of my pattern ideas, wheel-throw and assemble cake plates, screenprint 'raspberry coloured' underglaze, dry and bisque fire the cake plates, make 2 new glazes, including one matt pink and one transparent pink glaze, test the glazes and then try to paint gold luster around the rims of the cake plates once they've been fired.  I will say that I ended up falling into the cardinal sin of completely winging it in the end, for lack of time.  And yes, one of the 2 pink glazes I committed to completely burned out and is now milky clear.  Not wanting to end this journey in tragedy, I've decided not to do the gold luster after-all.  Besides all the toxic fumes, I'm not sure I wanted to risk the gold looking 'brassy' or copper.  Finger's crossed that what I've made is what the stylist/photographer/editor were hoping for...

Cupcakes by CocoCakes- seriously, these melt in your mouth and are the best- not too crazy sweet, cupcakes I've ever had.  So pretty too!
